MALE NUDE SHOTS ON TELEVISION BEGAN WITH The 1911 Italian film Dante's Inferno, directed by Francesco Bertolini,wich was loosely adapted from Dante's epic poem The Divine Comedy and inspired by the illustrations of Gustave Doré. In depicting tormented souls in hell, there are frequent glimpses of nude male and female actors (including the first male frontal scenes). Remade many times, the U.S. version, Dante's Inferno (1924) from the Fox Film Corporation, also contained groups of nude figures and scenes of flagellation. In 1966 the biblical epic based on the book of Genesis, The Bible: In the Beginning,was released by Twentieth Century Fox featuring a nude Adam and Eve sequence.In that same year,the sci-fi thriller Seconds, starring Rock Hudson, contained an extended sequence of full frontal male and female nudity that was deleted from the original American release in which bohemian revelers dance and play in a wine vat. From 1968 on Violence, sex and male nudity found their way into mainstream films such as "Clockwork orange", "Last tango in Paris", "Women in love" and "The Blue lagoon". From the early 1990s until the mid-2000s, some primetime series (such as ABC's NYPD Blue and Once and Again,CBS's Chicago Hope and Fox's John Doe) experimented with nudity. NYPD Blue is noteworthy for featuring nudity in the context of people engaging in sexual activity. While fully exposed female breasts were never shown, the show often depicted full back nudity of men and women, usually in darkened rooms. In 1997, NBC broadcast an unedited version of Steven Spielberg's holocaust movie Schindler's List in prime time. The film features brief full-frontal nudity of both sexes in non-sexual contexts. Then-congressman Tom Coburn criticized NBC's airing of the film for its nudity, violence and profanity. Both Democrats and Coburn's fellow Republicans criticized Coburn for his reaction, and defended the film and NBC's choice to air it in full.Coburn subsequently apologized for his reaction.After Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson's breast during a live performance at the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show on February 1, 2004, a moral panic occurred, and theFederal Communications Commission (FCC) tightened its indecency rules due to public pressure.
